The Laguna Tee by ModKid

As a longtime fan of Modkid patterns, I was excited to see the latest pattern from Patty Young and her team of testers and sample sewers. The Laguna tee does not disappoint, featuring 4 views with varying sleeve types and options to create a whole summer wardrobe of tees and tanks for your girl. The size range includes 9 sizes from 2T-12, and Patty includes finished measurements in the pattern in order to help you get the best fit. The Laguna tee has a loose fit and is a swing style top.  I knew that I wanted the chest to be fairly fitted and the rest of the body had significant ease already due to the swing shape, so based on the finished measurements I opted to sew a size 4 with the size 6 length. It was a great fit for my daughter, and she loved the tank that resulted (I sewed the view B for this review). Miss P and I paired it with RTW leggings that I’d cut off into shorts, but Modkid released a companion leggings pattern for the Laguna tee that features some really cute options also.

The pattern is well organized and is easy to follow; there is a separate section for each view of the pattern that is clearly delineated. Once I selected the tank option (there are also views for a raglan tee with a single or double flutter  cap sleeve, full flutter sleeve, or an angel sleeve), I made sure to read through the instructions for view B and the pattern did not take long to sew. The front and back neckline feature a bit of gathering, and  I wish the pattern had specified a little more clearly how wide the finished gathered section should be. The finished product fit well, though,  and looked adorable. As with all of the Modkid patterns, there are several inspiration pages that showcase tester images and share some great ideas for interpreting this pattern and selecting the right fabric for it. I love that Patty always includes a caption that indicates which size and view is being shown in the photo; I find that very helpful as I’m wading through the options and deciding which options to choose.

The straps are bound off from the neckline and then tie at the shoulders. I loved that the ties were long enough to make cute little bows, but not so long that they had long tails hanging down. Helpful tip: I used wonder tape to hold the straps closed and neat while I topstitched them. I debated about using a zig zag stitch for this, but ended up u;sing my coverstitch on a narrow stitch, and I’m glad the tape helped hold everything in place for a neat finish. I know I’ll be making more of these, since my girl really liked the fit and it’s a cute everyday pattern for her. The numerous options ensure that they won’t all look alike, and I’ve got lots of fun knits just waiting for me to cut into them and get to work. So, I’ve gotta ask - which option will you sew first??!

Until next time,

Rachel
