Hi! I am so excited to be part of the OTT challenge and share my little redhead’s holiday dress.  I’ve had the idea for this dress in my head for a while after seeing a GORGEOUS dress on the runway by Oscar De La Renta. (https://www.pinterest.com/pin/144959681727113138/)  So, when I saw this striped fabric at Hobby Lobby I KNEW I had to make my own version of this dress!  Obviously a 6 year old wouldn’t do well with a strapless gown so I used the Hummingbird Dress Pattern by Rabbit Rabbit Creations as the base.

This is one of my all time favorite patterns!  I’ve used it to make a simple sundress for summer.  And now this gorgeous gown!  I wanted the dress to be tea-length to show off the gorgeous tulle underskirt.  So I lengthened the skirt length to my daughters measurements.  She also loves pockets in her dresses so I added pockets as well.  I then trimmed the bottom with black satin for a special little touch.  (there is also a black satin sash but I forgot it when we went out for pictures….oops!)

The tulle slip is the foundation to making this entire look OTT.  I made it a slip instead of a lining so that the dress could be worn without it for a more casual look.  I did the tulle as a circle skirt in alternating layers of pink and red.  There are 40, yes FOURTY yards of tulle used in the making of the slip!  And yes, it took forever! haha!  But it was worth every single hour I spent making it :)

And since it’s been chilly here in Florida (yes, it happens) I wanted to make a little caplet to go over the dress.  I found this gorgeous Waverly fabric in the remnant bin at Hobby Lobby and thought it would be a great pop of color against the black and white lines of the dress.  I lined it in bright pink satin and put a gold rope clasp on the front for closure.  I drafted the caplet from a vision in my head so there was no pattern.  It is basically a full circle cape that I pleated in the back to draw your eye to the gorgeous pattern in the fabric.

Thank you so much to the girls at Pattern Revolution for this challenge and getting me out of my comfort zone and create something that I wouldn’t normally try.  My little redhead now will be the best dressed for sure at the Nutcracker ballet and I now have the most gorgeous Christmas pictures of my two youngest children. :)
