Kiss the Cook: Or at least give them a nice gift!

I tend to think of adult gifts as being hard to fit in the 'handmade' category....but really they don't have to be at all!!!!  We've already shown you adult Socks and FREE Pajamas that will make great gifts, and don't forget those teacher totes and notebook covers that are also great for girlfriends and the in-laws!!!!  Today, Lisa is here to share the perfect gift for any cools in your life.  While she has whipped up a gorgeous floral version, I can completely see my BBQ loving little brother wearing this as he teaches his kids the art of the grill.

The simple lines are perfect for showing off a great fabric or adding a fun embroidery or applique.  These kitchen sayings from Urban Threads always make me smile (My in-laws are getting a set of towels with these embroidered, but I'm thinking they need a matching apron now too!!!)  Check Lisa's take on the Make and Create Apron from Pattern Emporium.

Hi, Lisa here, enjoying some Christmas cooking in my new apron.  I tried really hard to channel my inner Nigella Lawson for this photo shoot...staring down the camera and licking chocolate off a spoon...but I just couldn’t pull it off.  Still, it was good for a laugh, as you can tell from my photo above!

One of my favorite hobbies is cooking - and I don’t mean the routine of getting dinner on the table every night - I mean spending time on the weekends and holidays baking delicious treats.   Christmas is a great excuse to bring out some of the most delicious things, and there are always lots of recipes online and in magazines at this time of the year tempting me.  In particular, I’m drawn to the ones that involve lots of chocolate, even though it’s summer here in Australia, and it tends to melt everywhere!

So, of course, I need a beautiful apron to wear while I’m making all these lovely treats.  I’ve been able to combine lots of great things for this post - chocolate (I think I’ve covered that well enough now!), finding something to make for myself from those 1 yard cuts of gorgeous Jennifer Paganelli Happy Land fabric I’ve been hoarding, and the chance to use this apron pattern from the fabulous Pattern Emporium.

This is the Kids & Adults Make & Create Apron and Chef’s Hat pattern.  You get quite the variety of options for your pattern dollar with this one - the pattern includes options for ruffles, pockets, and different ties - all in kids sizes 2-14, and small, medium and large adult sizes.   I’ve made the basic apron here, which also works well for boys and men in your life (perhaps with a less flowery fabric choice - there are some photos for inspiration in the pattern).  The pattern also includes a chef’s hat - great for making a dress up set for your little ones.

This is a very quick and easy pattern to make, and is a great chance to learn how to make your own bias tape, if you’ve never done so before - the pattern comes with an extra 6-page tutorial booklet with step by step instructions and photos on how to make binding.   The cross-over tied back is a great design feature, which is much more comfortable to wear (and sits better on the body) than the normal over-the-neck apron style.

Pattern Emporium patterns are among the clearest and most detailed tutorials I’ve ever used, with lots of full colour photographs, clickable links to jump back and forth between different options, and every step documented in detail, and this one is no exception.  There is also a section at the back of the pattern giving you more ideas for getting creating with the pattern, including how to make an apron from a tea towel, which is something I’d love to try.

Perfect for a last minute gift idea - or a fun holiday sewing project for yourself or for your kids.  This is a pattern you’ll use over and over again.
