The Bayside Romper by New Horizons Patterns
/I’ve been a longtime fan of New Horizons patterns, and have sewn many of them, but the Bayside Romper stood out for me among a catalog of great options. The options are many (including a skirt, pants, and multiple sleeve lengths) but we went with a sleeveless version with shorts for our upcoming family beach vacation.
The instructions were well written and easy to follow, and the fit was spot-on. I cut a size 6 width and modified to a size 8 height in the bodice, armholes, and shorts rise, and the fit was truly near perfect for Miss P. The instructions call for the use of clear elastic to help secure the crossover back bodice, and I’m glad I decided to follow the instructions - there was no gaping in the back, and I didn’t even need to tack the crossover to keep it secured.
I used custom printed cotton lycra from Cuddle Muffins fabrics, and the quality is fantastic. The knit is soft and thick, and helps the Bayside keep its shape nicely. This romper is easy on, easy off, and a satisfying sew. It’s packed and ready for vacation already, and Miss P asked me to make another one or two in the coming days - there’s still plenty of summer left here!

When an opportunity to review the Bayside Romper and Dress from New Horizons came up, I jumped at the chance. This romper is packed full of so many options like most New Horizons patterns - I love New Horizons patterns - they are well drafted and sew up very true to size. I found the Bayside romper to be no exception.
We are suffering through Winter in my part of the world and I chose the long leg version of the romper. My daughter measures exactly on size five measurements at the moment and it really was a perfect fit for her. Being mid winter here, it will get popped back in the wardrobe for another 39 days (yes you Northern Hemisphere peeps, the sun will be returning here shortly) until September, when it will get lots of wear. The huge variety of options in this pattern makes it perfect for transitioning between seasons and layering with cardigans and jackets as the weather changes.
My daughter loves rompers - they are easily her favourite thing to wear, but sometimes for smaller people they can be a little tricky when it’s time to use the bathroom. The cross over design at the back is perfect. The clever use of elastic that is enclosed by the binding makes it easy for little people to get it on and off themselves, without loads of gaping. I was really pleased with how the back sat actually - being the mother of a fair skinned child, in a country with the highest skin cancer rates in the world, I was worried it might be too low and expose too much skin to the sun, but it is perfect!
This is yet again another brilliant pattern from New Horizons, and I would highly recommend it. Our wardrobe will be filled with them over the next few months! Thanks for reading along and happy sewing.
