Urbanite Pants by Rabbit Rabbit from One Thimble Issue 4

I know most of you are probably already anticipating the next issue of One Thimble, but I am still in love with Issue Four. If you have not heard of One Thimble, it is an amazing quarterly PDF Ezine that contains PDF patterns, business articles, and sewing tips and tricks. Today I'm sharing the Urbanite Pants with you. The pattern is by Rabbit Rabbit Creations and is available here in Issue Four or as a Single Pattern.

My son started Kindergarten in July, and I dropped about a hundred dollars on fall clothes for him, particularly jeans from the Children's Place. Unfortunately, all of a sudden he is refusing to wear any pants with zippers and buttons even though he has been wearing them for years without issue. I think he is afraid of needing help getting them done back up after using the bathroom and my shy boy will do anything to avoid attention or embarrassment. Enter the Urbanite Pants.

The Urbanites can be made from a variety of fabrics. I chose an ultra heavy denim since Asher is a typical 5 year old boy...not easy on clothes at all! They feature an elastic waistband, so my son was delighted to throw them on. My 9 year old was even a little jealous and he has asked me not to sew for him for the last year, so I think that speaks volumes!

I really like the detail and added durability of the double topstitching throughout. If you have never tried a twin needle, DO IT NOW! It will change your life! I did run into a little difficulty due to my ancient machines not wanting to sew through the multiple layers of thick denim where two topstitched seams would meet, so you'll notice that I have shifted them just bit to be able to get through the material (see last photo). Using something lighter weight next time would help me avoid this issue (or buying a new mack daddy machine...but that's not going to happen!).

The pattern comes in sizes 1-12 and can be for either boys or girls, but it is not designed to accommodate for diapers, so keep that in mind if you are sewing for a little one. The pattern has color coded lines for sizes and goes together beautifully. It includes a measurement chart to assist you in choosing your size and also includes instructions for how to get the perfect fit for your child.

The pants feature front contrast pockets, back patch pockets (thanks for the folding guide on the pattern piece, that sure made them easy!) and a contrast yoke. I made the yoke the same as my main fabric for durability.

Here's a shot showing my offset seams. I just could not get my machine to tackle the thick fabric joining that many layers. Not how I wanted it, but an OK solution.

Now that I've made them, I know I will be making more, and I'm on the hunt for good bottom weight fabric, so let me know if you see any good sales!
