With summer right around the corner the Rinna Dress by Lilybird Studio is a perfect quick and simple sew. The pattern is designed for knits and comes in two lengths: knee length and maxi length. I absolutely love maxi dresses and the pattern comes in both women’s sizes XS-XXL and girls’ sizes 1-10. So, to make it fun I did a mommy and me set for my daughter and myself.  Best parts of prep: the pattern has an option to print in layers so that you only print the size you need AND the pages overlap so there is no cutting off borders. This saves so much time and effort! These are the things of which my pattern dreams are made.

The dress has a simple round neckline and Aline skirt with the option of inseam pockets. You also have the choice of a drawstring or elastic waist. I made the elastic waist for both dresses. For my daughter Kiwi I blended a size 2 bodice and 5 length which came out perfectly for her slender build. For my dress I made a size Small, but used the lengthen/shorten line to adjust the length as this pattern was made for someone 5’5”, but i’m only 5’ 1 1⁄2”. I did not hem the bottoms of the dresses. I  usually don’t hem knits, but I may go back and hem them later. I’m just not sure yet. Kiwi’s dress did get pockets which she loved and after wearing my dress to work I wished that I had added the pockets to mine, although it’s perfectly fine without.

I thought it would be cute to do color blocked maxis for Kiwi and myself. The gorgeous fabrics were provided by  BWD Fabric & Supplies. Each fabric was a Cotton Lycra blend with great recovery and weight for this project. I loved mixing the solid print and dots to keep Kiwi’s dress age appropriate without being boring while still coordinating with mine. Color blocking instructions are not in the pattern, but it’s a fairly easy modification. Feel free to ask questions in the comments for more information on how I did the color blocking. The main thing to remember is to add a seam allowance to the pieces so that you can sew them together without taking width or length from the original pattern.

I was a little worried that I wouldn’t like the way that I arranged the fabric, but after I finished Kiwi’s dress I was in love. The fit on the bodice of both dresses is amazing. We both got compliments as soon as we walked out of the door for pictures and my coworkers were big fans of mine at work as well. This dress is such a great little staple piece and so comfortable. I already have plans for more before summer is fully upon us.

We had such fun hanging out in our mama made fashion I can’t wait to do it again. If you have a chance to make the adorable and easy dresses please swing by the Pattern Revolution Facebook Group. We’d love to see them..
