Coco Island Romper and Dress by Modkid
/Hi! Rachel here again, with another review of a great new summer pattern - the Coco Island Romper and Dress from Modkid Patterns. Miss P has declared this the summer of rompers and I’ve been happy to oblige. They’re super cute, easy and relatively quick to sew, and less laundry in the always overflowing basket. One piece to put on and take off makes it a little faster for my not-a-morning-person girl to get ready and out the door to wherever our adventures have us headed, too.
For the Coco, I opted for the shorts romper with the halter neckline - there’s a skirt option as well as a cool slit back option. I sewed a size 6 with added length to the bodice and shorts (and the shorts rise) based on Miss P’s measurements and the size chart/finished measurement charts that are included in the pattern. The shorts are very full, and I could have sized down a little more in the width for those, I think - but they’d also look really cute as bloomers with elastic in the hem, too. The cut of the bodice is unique and dramatic, but next time I’ll widen it a little near the underarms - she was a bit concerned that she might have a wardrobe malfunction and expose herself too much. I ended up just cinching the back elastic more tightly and that helped hold it all in place. I’d recommend basting the side seams to the bodice and checking the fit and placement before proceeding with that step, just to make sure that the fit is snug and comfortable for the wearer. The pattern is well drafted and the instructions are clear and easy to follow, and I liked the way the steps were ordered in the construction as well.
I used cotton lycra from Peek-a-Boo Fabric Shop for this romper, and it held its shape nicely. I’d love to see this with a fun drapey knit like a tie dye rayon lycra for the shorts, too! So many options and the look is modern and stylish but still youthful and fun. It’s another win for our “summer of rompers” - can’t wait to see what you sew up, too!
