Hummingbird Dress by Rabbit Rabbit Creations

I love the simple elegance of this design and the ease to mix it up with so many different fabrics. Hey all Raedene here from Chasing Mermaids. I sew for my girls and my shop. I know this dress will be a hit for both as I fell in love the first time I saw it!
The Hummingbird by Rabbit Rabbit Creations--simple and elegant; twirly and fun; play or formal; a girl's keepsake. When I first saw this pattern I knew it had to be part of my collection. I loved the the simplicity of the dress with a flair of class. It looked like a quick sew with lots of WOW factor. I was correct. It is a keeper. And I will make many many more.
We are beach lovers and spend so much time there that I knew I had the perfect fabric to make some gorgeous sundresses for my girls this summer. I chose to use the Seaworthy fabric line by Dear Stella. The mermaids and seahorses are two of my favorites and the pops of color are perfect for beach filled days and photos! Throw on a little cardigan when the evenings cool and it will last from spring through fall down here in the south.
This dress pattern has loads of options:
I chose to make two dresses one for each of my girls. When I first cut the skirt pieces, I chose the "play" measurement width of the skirt on the chart. I held it up and thought it looked to narrow for my girls who love twirly skirts. I really should have thought about it first, but it is a good way to make a play dress that does not require a lot of fabric. I set that cut aside and chose to do the "dress up" width for the mermaid dress photographed. It was twirly and a perfect tea length. The second one I made was the seahorses and since I chose to do panels I went with the fullest skirt.
I do recommend when choosing the size to make you pay attention to the chest measurement more than anything else. I made the mermaid dress initially for my older one and I went with her standard sizing as she is between sizes in the chest. It was a little snug so thankfully lil sis could wear it as they are a size apart! The simple bodice and thin straps are very stunning in all its simplicity. I have seen many use ribbon, decorative bias tape and other trims as the straps in place of fabric.
The back is my favorite part. I love the skinny straps and they way the meet so sweetly in the middle creating a perfect "V". It is simply stunning.
These dresses can be made by beginners and are a fast sew under two hours cut to finish for sure!. I will make many more. I keep thinking of all the options and fabric choices and trims that can truly make each unique. The pattern contains detailed directions with color photos and measurement cut charts. This only printing pattern piece is the bodice so little paper is required. The back bodice is enclosed elastic so no shirring necessary… (yes i fear shirring a bit too).
My girls loved their dresses and they LOVE dresses, but when my 5 year old no longer wants to wear "mommy made" clothing, she didn't complain one bit when I showed her this one! A huge success in my book! And a little curtsy from my princesses.

- Fully lined bodice and straps.
- Optional flutters to accent the straps.
- Wide size range from 1-12.
- Directions to make it a tunic or maxi length.
- Designed for wovens but a great template for a more formal dress in satins, chiffons, ruffling fabric and other fabrics.
- Directions to teach you to fully enclose seams if that is your fancy.

Hummingbird Dress by Rabbit Rabbit Creations Review
I was so excited to make the Hummingbird Dress by Rabbit Rabbit Creations! I had the occasion and fabric ready just for this dress. My youngest daughter graduated from preschool the other night and I wanted something special but a little different than the typical frilly dressy dress.
I was drawn to this dress for several reasons. I love the "tea length" for a special occasion. On a typical school or church day, I want her to wear shorts under her dresses. I knew for preschool graduation, I didn't want her to have on shorts under the dress so the length of the Hummingbird Dress was perfect to cover everything.
I have been looking for something to sew with my Michael Miller Glitz Chic Chevron Pearlized fabric that I've been hoarding has been sitting in my stash . Glitz is one of my favorite lines, it just screams super girly and fancy to me.
The Hummingbird Dress pattern includes drafted pattern pieces for the bodice and measurements for the skirt. There are three skirt options in the pattern. You can make an Everyday, Dress Up, or Something Special version of the dress. I would recommend making the Something Special version unless you want a super slim skirt or you are trying not to conserve fabric.
You can also make a base skirt and top skirt to make the dress even fancier. The skirt pictured is between the Everyday and Dress Up versions. I wish I had made the Something Special version to have a fuller skirt, but that is personal opinion.
When choosing the size to make, be sure to measure the chest and follow the size chart measurements. I think the dress is a perfect fit because I made the size according to the size chart but it isn't the size I would typically make. You can customize the straps to bring up the bodice higher if that bothers you, I might shorten it just an inch next time for my preference but that is a super easy adjustment.
The directions are so simple and this dress is such a fast sew. I can see the Hummingbird Dress being a summer staple. I also see some fancy Hummingbird dresses in our future!
This is how we started off the night at Preschool Graduation but thank goodness we ended the night with the pictures above.
My girl is not a frilly dress kind of girl and she typically doesn't like long dresses at all but she really liked this dress. I could have easily shortened the dress and probably will make some shorter versions for play. I hope you enjoy the dress!
