Sewing for Halloween: Super Heroes

Hey friends and Happy Halloween!!! This year my girls went for the super hero theme, with a touch of sass and girly vibes!!!

My youngest daughter, Honor, wanted to be one of her favorite TV Show characters, Owlette from PJ Masks. She initially asked for a frilly tutu skirt to go with a leotard but after talking her down from that nonsense, we agreed on leggings and leo set (because who really wants to sew with tulle if they don’t have to??!?!?).

I used this awesome tutorial I found on Pinterest to create the wings. I just tacked the wings to the shoulder seam and back of the wrist on the leo to keep her wings in place.

Kenzie picked to dress up as Wonder Woman this year, but wanted to be able to wear her outfit for gymnastics- her newest obsession. I freehanded the headband and cuffs from the same gold foil knit from Fabric.com that I used on the top of her leo. We still need to pick up an extra jump rope and spray paint in gold...but of course that project will probably happen the morning of Halloween!!! (Procraftinators unite!!!!)

For both costumes, I sewed the same patterns which made things super fast and easy!!! I used the Treasurie Leo #6 pattern for the leotards. Since the girls will be trick or treating in Michigan cold weather, I added sleeves from the Violette Field Threads Talulah pattern, with a gathered cap for a girly touch! I paired their leos with the Violette Field Threads Betsy leggings with a yoga waistband.

I also put the new Cricut SportFlex iron on to the test with these leotards! I used Design Space to create the Owlette and Wonder Woman logo cut files and a small star for Kenzie’s headband. The SportFlex iron on is stretchy, like the knit material I used to sew the leotards and won’t crack or flake when stretched. The iron on also comes with the new DuraBond guarantee that I wanted to check out. I used the new Cricut Easy Press 2 and within minutes, I had applied all three iron on decals I cut out with my Cricut Maker! So far, we give it two thumbs up! The girls have worn their costumes for hours on end, tumbling, flying and bending without a single sign of wear!!
